There is no need to run out to the drug store every time you have a cough or cold. If you feel under the weather in any way, you may already have some items in your own home that can help ease your aches and pains. Below are just 5 amazing home remedies to try. So keep these simple things on hand and avoid those expensive over the counter medicines if you can.
Lemon and honey. Stop a cold in its tracks by squeezing the juice of half a lemon into a cup of boiling water, add the half of lemon as well, and a teaspoon of honey. Let steep for a little and then sip slowly. The vitamin C boosters in this drink will help cut a colds symptoms short. Try for a few days in a row, especially in the evening before bed. Another way is to drink Lemon Tea with honey in it. I only use raw honey!
Gingerroot. If you have any nausea or an upset stomach, the old saying is to “drink ginger ale.” Well, most ginger ales don’t really contain real ginger. You are better off shaving a few pieces of fresh gingerroot into boiling water, let cool a little, and sip to relieve your symptoms.
Garlic. One of the best natural home remedies I have found that really works for a bad sore throat is garlic. Mince a few cloves, add to warm water, and drink. No, it won’t be the best hot beverage you’ve ever had, but the anti-microbial in garlic will soothe a sore throat. Repeat for 2-3 days if needed.
Cranberry Juice. This is a pretty common home remedy for most urinary tract infections in men and women. It’s important to know to use pure organic cold pressed, not from concentrate, juice. Most people buy cranberry juice cocktail and they have no properties in it to help with the infection. This is the one area where going organic pays off well.
My Favorite of the Home Remedies
Dark Chocolate. If you love chocolate and you have a persistent cough, then this is the remedy for you. There is compound in dark chocolate called theobromine that has been shown to be a lot more effective than using cough medicines containing ingredients such as codeine without all the side effects.
Most importantly, try home remedies first and see how they work for you and if your results aren’t very good, ask your pharmacists for some over the counter suggestions based on your symptoms. Too many times we end up buying and using the wrong medicines that don’t treat our symptoms. And last but not least, a doctor’s visit and prescription medicines might be the answer. Stay healthy!
