Whether it’s nausea from pregnancy or a stomach virus, there are things you can do that don’t require opening the medicine cabinet. Before you drink the nasty pink liquid, consider one of these natural remedies for nausea.
One of the best things you can do is make ginger tea. All you need to do is steep ginger root in hot water. However, if you want the flavor to be better, steep the ginger in your favorite flavor of tea. Ginger has been used for thousands of years to treat stomach aliments. If you want to get a double bang for your buck, steep ginger in peppermint tea. I absolutely love Pukka’s teas. I love their Lemon, Ginger, & Manuka blend.
Peppermint is another natural remedy for nausea. You can suck on peppermint candies made with real peppermint, drink peppermint tea, or add 2-3 drops peppermint oil to a glass of water. Peppermint is wonderful for digestion. It can even help with gas pain. One thing you want to keep is mind though is if you have problems with acid reflux or heartburn, peppermint may cause problems.
Sometimes all you need to do to treat nausea is relax. Anxiety can cause an upset stomach and may be the reason you’re in so much misery. Just lay down and relax. Focus on your breathing and count to ten. You might even want to try imagery to help reduce the anxiety.
Eat Crackers or Dry Toast
If you feel that you can stomach a bit of food, saltine crackers or dry toast can help sooth the stomach. Sometimes you just need a bit of food to ease the nausea. Dry toast and crackers work because they are low in fat and very bland.
Treat the Underlying Issue
Last, but not least, your nausea may be the cause of an underlying issue. Obviously, you can’t do anything about your pregnancy, but if you’re nauseous for another reason, you may be able to treat the problem. For example, if you have nausea that doesn’t seem to go away and is accompanied by abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, you may have a problem with your gallbladder, food poisoning, or a number of other stomach issues. This is when it’s time to see your doctor for diagnosis.
Sometimes nausea is a simple issue that can be treated with items found in your kitchen. Then there are times when you need to treat an underlying issue. The good news is there are methods you can use until you find the cause. The next time you have an upset stomach, reach for some ginger or peppermint to sooth your nausea.
